“OLD KING COLE”
TO the EDITOR.
Sir, —Those of your readers who have been in England recently cannot help but feel that the ideas of Mr G. D. H, Cole have undergone a. change, just like those of any other wise man. Passages quoted by people who wish our laws to become as those of the Medes and Persians do» not, as it seems, fairly .represent the views of Mr Cole as they are now. Writing lately in the Daily Herald, he said that the trend of progressive thought to-day is in the direction, not of confiscating other folks’ property, but of enlightened control in the national interest of the policy of our banks and commercial , institutions. *
This suggests that the Welfare League is delving in Triassie beds under the impression that its fossils are recent. Even if the Socialist State under Dictator Cole did propose to confiscate the Bank of England, the army and navy stores and Imperial chemical industries, would it.be likely to take them down the Thames and dump them into the North Sea? On the contrary, it would give their highly efficient staffs an opportunity of showing how much more service they could render when a dozen persons were added to their roll of customers for every one who can do business with them now. What,, is really suggested is that boards of directors should be mads the seats of bighearted Britons who render service not only with their lips but in their lives. —I am, etc., MacGregor Walmsley. St. Kilda, August 13.
