THE SPANISH REPUBLIC
REVOLUTION FAILS MANY ARRESTS, MADE. MADRID, August 12.' Spain is practically normal after the popular rejoicings over the failure of the revolt, one result of which has been to establish the Republic more firmly in power. Most of the Monarchist and Catholic newspapers in Spain have been suppressed. Arrests continue, including the late General Primo de Rivera's two sons. The Marquis of D’Estival, whose chalet at Seville was General San Jurgo’s headquarters during the latter’s brief regime, thrillingly escaped to Gibraltar after the mob had burned down the chalet. The marquis and a friend motored to the coast and attempted to reach Gibraltar by motor boat, which broke down, whereupon the marquis swam to British territory, where many officers implicated in the revolt are already hiding.
