SPECIAL PICTURE MATINEES Inspired by the success attending Saturday morning matinees given in other centres, the sole charge for admission being the gift of an article of food or clothing, the management of three Dunedin picture theatres—the St. James, Strand, and King Edward—instituted a similar scheme on Saturday morning for the benefit of the Central Mission Relief Depot. The response in each case was highly gratifying, and when the programmes were commenced at 10.30 a.m. the lobby of each theatre contained large piles of brown paper parcels enclosing a wide variety of acceptable gifts. Butter, jam, vegetables of every kind, and a good quantity of clothing were received, and the Rev. L. B. Neale and his band of workers at the depot were agreeably surprised at the public’s generous response to their request for food and clothing. They desire to express their sincerest thanks to all who gave assistance. PORT CHALMERS RELIEF WORKERS SETTLEMENT OF DISPUTE. The dispute between the Port Chalmers Relief Workers’ Association and the Unemployment Committee was definitely •ettled on Saturday morning, when representatives of the association met the Unemployment Committee to discuss the position. The Mayor (Mr J. Watson) occupied the chair, and Mr A. E. Ansel!, M. also attended the meeting. At a previous meeting the two alterna-

tivc schemes offered by the Unemployment Board had been discussed, and it had been decided to adopt the scheme by which relief workers would be given 12 days’ work in each four weeks, the “stand-down” week being eliminated The Workers’ Association had objected to the adoption of this scheme on the grounds that the men could earn only as much in four weeks as they were previously able to earn in three weeks, and an added disadvantage was that they had no “blind” week in which they could obtain extra work to supplement tbeir relief pay. The matter was further discussed on Saturday, and it was decided to adopt the second scheme, under which the men will he given 12 days’ work in three weeks, and will then have a “standdown ” week.
