CITY POLICE COURT

Monday, July 4. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Alexander Marshall pleaded guilty to charges of drunkenness, procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order and being unlawfully on licensed premises.—A sentence of 14 days’ imprisonment was imposed on the first charge, and the defendant was convicted and dis charged on the other two counts. UNLAWFULLY ON PREMISES. John William Henry Thompson and James Ernest Boreham ■ were charged with drunkenness and with being unlawfully on licensed premises.—Each defendant was fined 20s in default 24 hours’ imprisonment on the former charge, con victions being entered on the latter. PROHIBITED PERSON CHARGED. Christopher Hoggard Marr was charged with procuring liquor while prohibited.— Counsel for the defendant applied for a week’s adjournment, and after the arresting constable had tendered evidence this was granted, MOTORIST FINED. Richard Jamieson pleaded guilty to negligently driving a motor car and was fined 30s and costs (3s). MAINTENANCE. Archibald Stuart was charged with dis obedience of u maintenance order, the arrears on which were shown to be £8 2s 6d. —The defendant applied for varia tion of the order.—After hearing evidence as to the defendant’s circumstances, the magistrate adjourned the matter for a week to allow’ the child welfare officer to report. John Brown Summers, who was charged with disobedience of a maintenance order, the arrears on which amounted to £24 Os 6d, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended conditional on ,his paying £5 on or before July 11, and £5 per month thereafter until the arrears are discharged. Talbot Leslie Narford Johnston was charged with disobedience of a maintenance order, on which he was in arrear to the extent of £l2. —He was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, the warrant to be suspendd so long as he pays £7 on 0/ before July 11, and a further £5 within the following fortnight. John Dwyer was proceeded against on a complaint for affiliation and maintenance orders in respect of an illegitimate child of which he was alleged to be the father.—After the evidence of the com plainant had been taken, the hearing,was adjourned until July 25 to enable the defendant’s evidence to be taken at Invercargill. Arthur James Henery applied for variation of a maintenance order of £llss per week in force against him in favour of his wife.—After the applicant had explained his circumstances, the hearing was adjourned to allow the maintenance officer to inquire into the position. THEFT PROM HOTEL. James E. M’Dowell pleaded guilty to having stolen 10s 7H the property of Vincent Michael Keen, and to procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. A charge of publishing a betting chart was also preferred against the accused, but to this he pleaded not guilty.—Chief Detective Young explained that the accused had stolen the money from a bedroom in the Metropolitan Hotel. He was under the influence of liquor at the time, although a prohibition order was in force against him. Du bis being searched at the watehhouse, a double chart on the Ashburton races was found in his possession, and this he admitted having operated on a 50-o0 basis with another man.—The magistrate sail that there was no evidence to support the charge of publishing the chart, and this information would therefore be dismissed. —Counsel for the defendant appealed for such leniency as the court could extend, and pointed out that the accused had not gone into the room athe hotel for the express purpose of stealing the money.—The magistrate ordered the accused to be remanded in custody until July 8, the probation officer to furnish report in the meantime.
