OTAGO RUGBY UNION

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE The weekly meeting of the Committee of Management of the Otago Rugby Union was held last night. The president (Mr S. G. Styche) occupied the chair. R. W. S. Betting wrote notifying that the tournament dates for the South Island high schools’ tournament to be played in Dunedin would be Monday, August 22, and Thursday, August 25. Messrs Douglas Spedding, D. M. Stuart, and E. S. Wilson (secretary) were appointed a subcommittee to represent the union at the tournament. Permission was granted to the University A team to travel to Christchurch on July 5 for its annual match with Canterbury College. R. Geary, of the Taieri Club, wrote stating that he had been - selected as a member of the South Island Maori .team, and asking for permission to play in the match at Palmerston North on July 9. Permission was granted, the Taieri Club to be notified. A letter was received from the Canterbury Union confirming ■ July 30 as the date of the match with the Otago junior representative team and the Canterbury senior B team at Dunedin. This match will be played as a curtain-raiser to the senior representative match. —Noted. PLAYERS ORDERED OFF. The referee (Mr F. C. Smith) in the Fourth Grade match Alhambra B-Union, reported having ordered off the captain of the Alhambra team for using offensive language.—The referee and the player appeared before the committee. It was decided to suspend the youth for the remainder of the season. —It was also decided to write to the Alhambra Club and draw its attention to the conduct of the player suspended and to the fact that the referee had had occasion to speak to two other members of the Alhambra The referee (Mr W. Blagdon) reported having ordered off a member of the Taieri team in the Fourth Grade match against High School for striking an opponent.— It was discovered that the youth had given a wrong name and that the captain of the team had said, he did not know his name. —It was decided that the captain of the team, the player implicated, and a member of the committee of the Taieri Club be requested to attend the meeting of the committee next week, it was also decided to suspend the player in the meantime—lt was further decided that referees in the Fourth and h nth Grade matches should insist on having cards containing the players’ names before a gamb was started. SUB-UNION’S TEAM. Letters were received stating that Messrs J. Edgar (West Otago),. J. H. George (Tuapeka), T. Lynch (Maniototo), E. Marslin (Vincent). John Gordon (Lastern District), and J. Murdoch (South Otago) had been appointed the selectors of the Otago Sub-union’s team which is to play a country at Invercargill on Saturday, July 23.—Noted. NON-REPLACEMENT OF PLAYERS. J. Mackenzie, captain of the Otago University Club, wrote as follows: At a special meeting of our senior teams, called for the purpose of discussing the new ruling regarding the non-replacement ot injured players, it was decided to lodge a strong protest from the members of our club We quite understand that the Otago Rugby Football Union had no alternative but to stand by the New Zealand Union a decision on the matter, but we consider that club football should be carried on in a spirit of friendly rivalry, as has been the custom in the past, and not as a survival of the fittest. We hope that this letter may in some measure stimulate interest among the clubs in Otago in a matter of such vital importance to the players, the game, pid all that it stands f °S. R. Inglis, honorary secretary of the Southern Football Club, also, wrote on the matter. He stated that it was the opinion of his club that it was not tair to handicap a side by asking it to play with less than 15 players or by asking an injured player to stop on the field ■wiien he was unfit to do so. The game was only a Saturday afternoon pastime and his club thought it should be decided by sportsmanship rather than by a fine interpretation of the rulds. . Letters of protest against the non-re-placement of injured players were also received from the Kaikorai and Por Chalmers clubs. . . ' . The South Otago Sub-union wrote stating that it considered the rule very drastic and that it did not favour it at all. A letter -was read from th& Otago Referees’ Association asking if referees were to take it as a definite instruction that replacements must, not be. allowed. It'wag understood that in some instances teams had agreed to replacements. On the letters being read Mr J. B. Wootton asked what they could do. Mr D. C. Jolly: Is it a fact that teams replaced injured players last Saturday?. The chairman: We have no official intimation. Mr Jolly: Do any members know about it? There was no answer. , It was stated that the New Zealand Rugby Union was waiting for further information about the matter from the English Union. . Mr H. Harris said he did not think any good would result by sending copies of the letters, as had been suggested, to the New Zealand Union and asking for a meeting of delegates. Could any good follow this season if a meeting of delegates were called by the New Zealand Union. The season was now getting on to its end The New Zealand Union could, however, send a cablegram to the English Union at once asking it to reconsider the interpretation it had put on the rule in question. . Mr Douglas Spedding moved —■“ That this committee notifies the New Zealand Union that letters of protest have been received from practically every club, and requests the New Zealand Union to call a special meeting of delegates to consider the matter.” Mr D. M. Stuart moved as an amendment:—“That the New Zealand Union be advised that this committee has had protests from practically all its clubs and sub-unions against the enforcement of the rule regarding the non-replacement of players, and requests the New Zealand Union to cable the English Union for a dispensation to enable injured players to be replaced, and that a copy of this resolution be sent to all the unions affiliated to the New Zealand Union."

Mr Harris said he quite believed that the Committee of Management of the New Zealand Union was itself against the new interpretation of the rule. Mr Stuart’s amendment was carried by a large majority. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Harris, to request the clubs to carry out the wishes of the New Zealand Rugby Union and not to replace injured players. It was also decided to notify the High School Club that the decision of the New Zealand Union also referred to school matches. ■

It was further decided to request the Otago Referees’ Association to instruct its referees not to allow the replacement of injured players. FREE SCHOOL FOOTBALLS.

The Finance Committee reported that in its opinion it was not desirable that the New Zealand Rugby Union should enter into competition with firms in the various provinces and supply, as the union proposed, free footballs to schools next year in lieu of the cash grants. The committee took strong exception to the proposal of the Management Committee to supply these footballs. The report was adopted. DANGEROUS STUDDED BOOTS. Mr A. J. Haub brought up again the danger through players wearing pegs on their boots in which the nails were protruding, and it was decided tb write to the. clubs pointing the danger. It was also decided tb'jinform clubs that the referees were to be instructed to take a strong stand with players who so offended. GATE RECEIPTS. The secretary reported that the gate receipts from they match at Carisbrook on Saturday came to £lO5 6s 6d, and the receipts from all matches to £ll4 13s.
