TROTTING

By Sentinel.

The imported stallion Real Guy is now owned by F.. G. Holmes. War Paint has been sold and is now in J. Davidson’s stable. _ It is stated that the imported stallion Truman Direct cost 600sovs in America. During the past three years Wrack has sired a winner and two seconds in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes. The imported riiare Miss Joan Direct has been improving in appearance and action, and now paces with plenty of dash. A good percentage of those handicapped for the light-harness events to be run at Timaru on Saturday remain as acceptors. Raclaim spoilt a sure win at Ashburton by putting in two breaks, one at the home turn and another at the finish, after losing ground at the start. Todd Lonzia is credited with going a solid race at Ashburton, and failed by just a neck to give away 120 yards to Great Burton.

Peter. Locanda was penalised 36 yards in the Winchester Trot, and put back to 60 yards. He does not figure amongst the acceptors. It is worthy of note that Great Bingen sired the winner of the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, and on the same afternoon Great Parrish, his half-brother, was amongst the winners. The Prime Minister (Mr G. W. Forbes), the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan), and Mr H. _F. Nicoll (president New Zealand Trotting Conference) have been elected patrons for the Owners’ and Breeders’ Association’s relief meeting on July 16. Wild Guy, the favourite for the Tinwald Handicap, had a very easy victory. He did not begin so smartly as usual, but along the back he went fast, and half a mile from home he had the race at his mercy. He is owned and trained at Rangiora, and he has shown good form on several previous occasions. He is by Guy Parrish, whose progeny have been racing very well this season. / Reports from Auckland state that Gold Jacket, winner of two Auckland Trotting Cups, ,ig being hacked about b> L. M'Mahon, who uses the son of Gold Bell as a riding hack. There are so few races for first-class horses nowadays that it does not warrant keeping them in training. However, if Gold Jacket is idle, his stablemate, Gold Seam, is getting plenty of work, and he is one of the fittest horses at Epsom. So far he has disappointed in his races, but this has been mainly because of a bad beginning. He is now getting more solid, and may be capable, of showing greatly-improved form next time he races. The Western Australian Trotting Association has for some time suspected that a system of fraud has been going on in regard to forged complimentary tickets. A successful trap was laid. Marked money was handed to a man under suspicion, and he, in return, is said to have handed over a forged ticket. Though admission to the paddoclc is 7s 6d, tickets were being sold for ss. Taken to the administrative offices, the marked money and forged tickets were found in his possession. Making a clean breast of it. he implicated others. The association reckons it was being robbed to the tune of about £IOOO a year.

A feature of the Trial Handicap at Ashburton was that it was won by a horse making his first public appearance, Craganour. and that this horse is the first light harness I-orse owned by the Wellington sportsman. Mr H. Murphy, whose name as an owner had previously only been seen on the galloping side of the turf. In Craganour, a half-brother, by Travis Axworthy, to Nona Bingen, he has a three-year-old, which will cause him no regrets for having entered his new sphere as an owner. * The ex-Victorian trainer, G. Mouritz. has made a happy beginning in his association with Mr J. R. M'Kenzie’s stable, as Taxpayer was the first horse he produced in a race, since taking up his position at Roydon Lodge He hag been there only a few weeks, and to win such a handsome prize as the . Sapling Stakes, at his first attempt for his new owner, is indeed encouraging. While Mouritz was actually responsible for landing Taxpayer at the post first (says the Press), to R. Dunn, who has recently resigned his position as trainer to Mr MTvenzie. the credit for having done the groundwork in the development and education of the two-year-old is due. Mr J. R. M'Kenzie must have derived great satisfaction from Taxpayer’s victory in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, as he not only owns the champion two-year-old. but he also bred. him. and further he owned and raced, and still owns both his sire and dam. Great Bingen and Nyallo. While Mr MTvenzie has raced light harness horses on a large scale, and he has spent large sums of money in the importation of American b’ood, Saturday’s win was his first classic success, and it may be considered (says an exchange), from his point of view, his most important triumph since he entered into active participation in the sport. It does not fall to the lot of many breeders to gain such an all-round ascendancy, and in this case it may be in the nature of a dream realised. 1 The benefit trotting meeting organised by the Canterbury Owners and Breeders’ Association, to be held at Addington on July 16. is arousing wide interest, and trotting enthusiasts are assisting the association in its endeavour to raise money for a worthy object. It is expected that the programme will be loyally supported by owners and trainers. Many of the best performers will be attracted, while the meeting will afford an opportunity to try out young pacers. Already information has been received from a number of officials, willingly giving their services free of charge, and the secretary, Mr I). F. Dennehy, reports that the arrangements for the meeting are well in

hand. Nominations will close at 8 p.m. on July 5. Handicaps will be declared by Mr G. S. Simpson on July 8 and acceptances will close on July 11. ■ After the Ashburton meeting the following re-asscssraents were made by Mr G. Paul:—
