RECEIVED BY PRINCE
. MRS EARHART PUTNAM FLYER ENTERTAINED. LONDON, May 25. Mrs Amelia Earhart Putnam, Vho recently flew alone across the Atlantic, callfed upon the Prince of Wales by invitation. His Royal Highness had a telephone message sent to the American Embassy. “But,” said Mrs Putnam, describing the incident, “ I was out running round London, s they had to dash out to look for me. Fortunately they were not long in running me to earth, “ I was delighted to receive the invitation to York House, and was with the Prince after luncheon for half an hour, discussing areoplanes and flying generally. “ The Prince is a popular figure in the United States, and we Americans greatly admire him. He is charming and delightful, just as I expected he would be.”
Mrs Putnam arrived at York House in a large saloon car, and although newspapers and kinemas had broadcast her picture she was not recognised except by a policeman, who saluted her.
The Prince received the airwoman in a private room, shook hands warmly with her, congratulated her, and asked many questions about the flight from his viewpoint as an expert flyer. Mrs Putnam was again unrecognised when returning to the Embassy. The luncheon to which she referred was an informal party in her honour at the United States Embassy, where, later in the afternoon, she entertained English airwomen to tea. She said -she was sorry not to receive their Majesties’ congratulations addressed to Londonderry, and added; “ I suppose the message is the proud possession of somebody else. However, a duplicate has been conveyed to me through the American Ambassador, Mr Andrew Mellon.”
