CLAIMS FOR ALLEGED LIBEL. WRITS AGAINST LABOUR DAILY. SYDNEY, June 10. The Minter Simpson Company has issued Writs out of the Supreme Court on behalf of Sir Hugh Denison, Sir John Butters, and Mr Albert Fordyce Wheeler, directors of Associated Newspapers, for £IO,OOO each against the Labour Daily and George Smith, printer and publisher. SIR PHILIP STREET. SWORN IN AFTER LONG DELAY. SYDNEY, June 10. The Chief Justice (Sir Philip Street) was sWorn in at Government House as Lieutenant-Governor. Sir Philip Street was given his commission more than 18 months ago, but was not sworn in because the Lang Ministry objected. COMMONWEALTH REVENUE. RETURNS FOR ELEVEN MONTHS. SYDNEY. June 10. (Received June 10, at 10 p.m.) The total revenue received by the Commonwealth for 11 months of the financial year is £61,846,000, of whici £7,620,000 represents recupts from the sales tax.' It is expected that the defic.t at the end of the year will be very slight, and there is even a strong possibility of a small surplus, especially if New South Wales interest payments are me* in the near future. MR BEASLEY’S ALLEGATIONS. DISPROVED BY REPORT. SYDNEY, June 10. (Received June 11, at 0.15 a.m.) The Prime Minister (Mr J. A. Lyons) has received a report from the Defence Department arising out of allegations made on May 14 by Mr Beasley, M.P., Leader of the Lang Group in the House of Representatives, to the effect that the Defence Department had been acting in concert with the New Guard. The report states that there is not the slightest foundation for the allegations. On the contrary the activities of the New Guard were a source of anxiety to the Defence Department, which was forced to take steps to safeguard its property, while in no instance was the New Guard in possession of confidential information in regard to defence stores, arms, and ammunition. ” “ i
