WAITAKI OLD BOYS

ASSOCIATION’S ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Dunedin branch of the AVaitaki High School Old Boys’ Association was held last evening in the Otago University Club’s rooms, the president (Mr E. E. Clowes) presiding over a fair attendance. i The annual report which was presented to the meeting stated: — “ The work of the committee during the year has bcon mainly to keep in touch with the old boys, with a view to i maintaining their interest in the school, lit has been found that the-best way to do this is by holding social functions. These functions took the form of a din- | :ier and a ball. The dinner was held ! on the evening of July 8, which was the day of the annual football match between AA r aitaki High and Otago Boys ; High Schools. There was a good attendance of AVaitaki old boys, and, unfortu- ' nately, from our point of view, the Otago boys won the senior game, while the junior I match was drawn. Unfortunately, Mr F. Milner was unable to be present at the dinner, but Mr M’Culloch was able to attend it, and he received a warm welcome, as did also Mosers Hall and Hendra, the masters who accompanied the teams as coaches. The ball was held at the» Tudor Hall, and was generally voted one of the most Successful of the season. It was the means of bringing a great many. AVaitaki old boys together. The committee in arranging the ball decided not to limit the sale of tickets to old boys only, but to allow a certain number of outsiders to attend the function. “ Over 60 members have paid their subscriptions during the year. The \ ship is really larger than this, but 'a few j have not yet paid their subscriptions, and some have left the district. The ac- j i counts to be presented with this report 1 ■ show a surplus of £7 2s lid on the year’s i working. This, added to the balance ■ brought forward last year (£27 2s 9d), makes a credit balance of £34 5s Bd, against which there is a liability of £6 14s 6d capitation fees due to the association, leaving £27 11s 2d in hand. “The AA r aitaki High School was opened, on May 15, 1883, and the coming year may be looked upon as a year of great j activity. The celebrations for the jubilee j have been fixed for May 13, 14, and 15. | I This event is being looked forward to 1 with a great deal of interest. Old boys all over New Zealand are requested to : send in their names and the years that they were at school to either the branch , association or the head association in j Oamaru, in order that due record may be made of their attendance. A file of old boys has been compiled, but it is necessarily incomplete and old boys will assist the completion of the roll by acting on this suggestion. The aim of the branch asosciations is to get into touch with old boys of their particular districts, and | when the roll is completed it will be a 1 service to the branch associations. This branch has endeavoured, as far as possible, by social functions, to get in touch with old boys living in Dunedin, and, j whilst it has been successful up to a point, i there is no doubt that there are a great many old boys in the district who will willingly join the branch association and make it even more successful than it has been 1 in the past.” The adoption of the annual report and balance sheet was moved by the chairman, and the motion was seconded by Mr F. AV. Sharpe. Mr R. Stuart Glendining and Mr C. R. Caffin spoke to the motion, urging the desirability of increasing the membership of the branch.

Mr A. Duncan referred to the satisfactory manner in which the business of the branch had been conducted during the year. The motion was carried.

The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year; —President, Mr E. E. Clowes; vice-presidents—Messrs A. Duncan, R. S. Glendining; secretary, Mr A. Francis; committee—Messrs J. R. Laidlaw, C. R. Caffin, S. W. Ferens, J. N. Murdoch, L, E. Barrett, and Captain King. There was some discussion on' the arrangements which are being made by the headquarters branch in connection with the jubilee celebrations to be held in May of next year, and the chairman urged all who could to take part in the celebrations.
