The International Labour Office at Geneva has issued figures showing an almost universal increase in unemployment throughout the world during 1931. The percentage increase in Britain is lower than in most places. It was only 7 per cent., while unemployment in Germany increased by 24 per cent,, in Italy by 53 per cent., in Belgium by 98 per cent,, and in France by 523 per cent. Exact figures arc not obtainable in the case of every country, but it is estimated that there were over 8,000,000 unemployed in the United States at the end of last year, and the German figure was over 0,000,000.
