ARGENTINE SHORTHORN .’■A CHAMPION ■[ By the courtesy of the Shorthorn Society of Great Britain and Ireland, we are able in this issue to publish the picture of one of the most perfect specimens of the Shorthorn breed of cattle that has ever been shown. This picture appears in the Shorthorn Breeders’ Guido of 1932, and the subject of it is Senor Carlos A. Brown’s magnificent three-year-old supreme champion white Shorthorn bull at the Argentine Rural Society s International Expocicion, held at v ßuenos Aires in 1930 and 1931 respectively. Senor Brown is the breeder and exhibitor of this perfect example of the class of Shorthorn cattle that is produced on his great stud farm, “Cabana Marion, Argentine Republic. During recent years Senor Brown s cattle have practically swept the board at, Palermo, where annually the largest number and best Shorthorn cattle in the world are to be seen in competition. The name of this remarkable young bull is Oakland Defence, calved January, 1929. Sire: The best breeding Shorthorn bull in South America to-day—viz., Balcairn Blackcock (104,572), bred by F. L. Wallace, Balcairn, Aberdeenshire.— Grand Sire: Edgcote Hero (136,371), the sire of Mr J. A. Johnstone’s New Zealand royal champion white bull Bushey Park Augusta’s Hero. —Great grandsire: The famous and handsome roan bull, Earl of Kingston (120,041).—The dannof Oakland Defence is Auchnacree Mptp 12tn, by Nigel of Cluny (116,747). _r The prize winnings of Oakland Defence} at the Palermo Show in 1930 and 1931 were as follow:- — . , 1930. —First prize in his class ana winner of seven championship challenge cups in other classes for which he was eligible. . , , 1931. —First prize in his class and winner of no fewer than 13 champion challenge' cups for which he competed, including the Supreme Grand Championship in both years.
