HARRIERS
By AmATECB. PACIFIC, CLUB Thfe Pacific Club held its One Mile «nd a-half Steeplechase for the Henry Brown Cup at Wingntui on Saturday last. After the recent rains the track was very heavy. A good field of 24 runners faced the starter (Mr W. Pimley). The limit men-G. Pledger, Pethrick, C. Roberts, and R. James —set off at a good pace and made use of their handicaps to the post-and-rails, where some of the back-markers were closing up. Going down the back straight Delaney came away very strongly and led to the water jump, where Walker, who was running a well-judged race, drew even. M'Laren, who was showing excellent form, made the pace and came away from the pack. Mann, who was always in evidence, put in a final dash, and although unable to overhaul M'Laren. put up a creditable performance. M'Laren (scr) won with a comfortable margin; J. Mann (50sec) 2, and W. Walker (20sec) 3. Time, Bmin 57sec. It was very pleasing to see the younger members of the club in their first race of this kind showing up so well. Some of the older members did not do what was expected of them, but with more training when the Three Mile Race at Wingatui is held, it is hoped to see some fast performances being registered. NORTHERN CLUB Next Saturday the Northern Club will hold its first sports meeting at Forbury Park, where three events will be decided -—BBO Yards Handicap, Hop, Step, and Jump and High Jump Handicaps. The 880 Yards should be an interesting race. Off the back marks N. Henderson and G. Armishaw are expected to run well, while J, Lothian, R. Stephen. J. Howie and A. Jackson, of the middle marks, should make the going fast. In the Hop, Step, and Jump Handicap B. Pearce and N- Henderson should jump well, but in this event there are always likely to be surprises, with a fair number pf new , members competing with unknown performances.- Unless someone new comes to light in the High Jump, this event ehould be well contested, as about five of the back-markers ate doing about the some height just at present. Last Saturday the annual run with the Abbotsford Club wae held from Dundas ‘street, about 40 runners turning out for a good afternoon’s sport. LEITH CLUB ■ On Saturday the Leith Club’s Threemile Championship will be decided at Forbury Park. Record entries have been received and the race promises to be the keenest yet held. Ibdividual honours appear to be swinging amongst the following members:—Mason, Ward, Masters, and Anderson. However, surprises are always likely, and perhaps Warrington or Miller may come to light. The previousmentioned members are all probables for inclusion in the team to represent the club in the Edmond Cup, but the rest of the individual places are very open. Amongst those _ who should complete the team are Peterson, Watson, M'Lean, Dalton, Davidson, Orange, Milne, Eckhoff, King, Palmer, or Maher, Juniors are reminded that points are awarded in this race towards the aggregate for the Watson junior cup. HANOVER CLUB Last Saturday _ the Hanover Baptist Harriers held their weekly run from the Roslyn Baptist Church, and a good muster of 48 runners enjoyed a long run over hilly country. The run started from Shetland street,_ skirting the Wakari School, and then across paddocks and bogs towards Flagstaff, where some stiff climbing was indulged in. Scrub and undergrowth hindered the progress of the packs, with the result that the slow pack arrived home almost in darkness. _ Meggett was first borne in the intermediate pack.. He is a first season’s runner and , appears to be full of dash. The Rev. C. Reay does not appear to relish long-distance running, but he has shown that he possesses sprinting capabilities "above the average. A. Scones has been promoted from the slow pack, and by hia.run on Saturday he deserved it. ’ J. Wheeler appears to be a solid type of runner and should give a good account of himself in the club’s Threemile Race. A.; Colter is running much better this. year, and should do well in sprint events. A. Marshall is a determined funner and is going to be hard to head in future events. . CIVIL SERVICE CLUB A field of 40 runners took part in the Civil Service Club’s One-mile Postal Cup Race, held at' Forbury Park on a very heavy track. The field moved away to a good start, the limit men making full use of their handicap, F. Andrews (I9oyds) went out . fast, but the scratch man, Barnes, was with M'Lachlan and Gecldeg (10yds) before 50 yards had been covered. A solid pace was being set, and Tracey (160yds), Brown (90yds). and Alba (150yds) were running with plenty of dash, and it looked, as if the winner would be one of them. Barnes passed M'Lachlan after the first halfmile, and running very easily, passed.most of the field on the bend entering’ the straight, and then, with a great burst, finished a winner by seven yards frorn E. G. Brown (90yds), who had run a fine race, and P. Tracey (160yds) third. The time. 4min 37 l-ssec, wae very good linder the conditions. The winner put up a fine performance, considering that he had just started his winter preparation. One of the disan- . • pbintments was the running of A. R. Geddes. the junior cross-countrv champion. who has rarely made such a noor effort. He would be well advised to do some short, fast work. L. C. M'Lachlan, who was reported to be in fine fettle, did not run as well as one would have expected, and when the winner moved up to his field M'Lachlan did not respond with his usual tenacity. E. C. Brown (90yds) ran his best mile to date, and should be a very fit man for the Edmond Cup. This runner is unluckv in that he lacks a finish, for the race looked to be his until Barnes put in his run. P. Tracey (160yds) ran .a solid race when one takes into consideration the fact that he has done np training. T. Allen is a junior who is improving each year, and next season will have to be reckoned with in this event. Other, members who showed .improvement were Brydone, M'Kernan. Gnrbutt, and Longworth.
