CYCLING

OTAGO CLUB The Otago Amateur Cycling Club held a run last .Saturday out to the Brighton Creamery and back, there being a good muster, of riders. In the run gome the pace was fairly fast, which goes to show that a few club runs before the actual racing starts may prove useful, as they give the riders a chance to, get into shape. Also, a rider is not so liable to Strain himself if he is fairly fit. A good many riders do not like going out training on their cycles at night, but there is no reason why they cannot train at home. A few minutes' skipping and a few ground exercises have just as good an effect as going out cycling. , ' . J. Nelson is showing good form just rrw, and should be a hard man to beat next Satuiaay. D. Sma-t will be a competitor next Saturday, and, judging by the form he displayed last week, he will keep the backmarkers moving for time honours. He is a big fellow and a very strong rider. - A. Beveridge is showing good form, and the two or three rides he has had with the club seem to have done him good, as he is taking the hills much more easily now, , , E. Blnir and D. Gray are showing better form each time out, and the writer will be very much surprised if these two riders do not fill the major places next Saturday, providing that they team together. Off the front mark with one or two- others, they seem to be the favourites. A. Oakes and J. Milne are in fairly , good trim, and should both go well on Saturday. R, Wilson-Pyne is displaying really good form just now, and it is to be hoped that he will soon take an active part in the races. D. O’Brien was out training over the week-end, and should keep the backmarkers moving if he starts on Saturday. N. Harwood, K. Duncan, A. Annison, F. Gneen field, A. J. Hay, J. Ferguson, and J, Murray ,are all expected to be competitors on Saturday. The race for Saturday is the first of a series of three for the Calder Mackay Challenge Cup, and will start from Parkside Hotel at 2.15 p.ra.—proceeding to the Riccarton road at East Taieri and back. Last year the Calder Mackay Cup was won by A. J. Hayward and P. G, M'Connell, who dead-heated, and each held it for six months. The course for the other two races for the cup will probably be twice round a block on the Taieri, a distance of 22 miles, and from Parkside to Scroggs’s Hill and back. Next Sunday the club will meet at Forbury Corner at 9.30 a.m. and have a slow ride through to Milton and back, having lunch at Milton. All riders are urged to turn out for this, as it will give them some idea of distance riding. As there will be two races over this course ■ later on, a knowledge of the course will be a big advantage. G. Milligan and J. Taylor are expected out shortly, and if the former gets into the form he was showing near the end of last track season much can be expected of him, while Taylor, in his best form, is one of the strongest road riders here. PACIFIC NOTES. The Pacific Club’s Three-mile Handicap was held on Saturday on the road, owing , to Forbury Park track being too wet to use A good race resulted in an easy win for D. M'Callum from C. Hansen second, H. Cooper third, C. Gilchrist fourth, and J. Kennedy fifth. The limit men did not make much use of their handicaps, as the scratch , men caught them before a mile of the course had been covered. Next Saturday’s race will be held from the Green Island Hotel at 2.30 p.m. to Brighton and back, a distance of about 12 miles. , ‘ G. Foster, T. Dasher, J. Thompson, G. Deans. T. Riddle, J. Kilner, and Les M'Gee should keep the scratch men busy if they team together and each does ms share of the work., G. Foster in partlcular should be a hard man. With Hansen and M'Callum teaming together, they should be hard to beat for fastest time. PROFESSIONAL NOTES I . , .V FIXTURES. May 21.—Parkside to Scrogg’s Hill and return. May’ 28.—Parkside to Allanton and retUJune 11.—Parkside to Wingatui hud return. June 18.—Gardena to Evansdale and return. .. . June 25.—Parkside to Otokia and retU July 2.—Parkside to Henley and return. ,

The stake winner of last, Saturday’s race was another ex-amateur in F. Beale, who rode a well-judged race to win by a length from M. Cannon. Beale, however, was ridinpc a free-wheel against Cannon s fixed, which gave him a big advantage over the final stages. Cannon is showing great consistency, and had he shown more judgment over the final stages the placings might have been reversed. A. H. Brown, another very consistent rider, rode a great, race into third place. At Mosgiel Junction he had a spill, or he would have been further up in the placings. Two more new riders were seen m Saturday’s race. They were J, Brown and F. Dalziel, who were both riding their maiden race, and too much could not be expected of them. However, judging by appearances, Dalziel should prove a good e". Brosnan, who has been off , his machine for some time, rode a strong race as far as he went, but will have to dp a little more training to be in the running. G. Johnstone is showing improved form, but needs more hill work. Much is expected of this man, as he is a fine stamp of a rider, and it would be a pity to see him fade out in future races through lack of training. ... , A. Ralston rode a determined race, but his knee was giving him trouble. Cyril Preen also rode a very solid race, but his lack of training told on his performance. It is hoped that these two riders will soon strike form, as they have some big handicaps to contend with. At the beginning of this season the club was very hard pressed for riders, having only 12 starters, but it has gone ahead with such success that there are now 21 fit riders. Besides cash prizes, a number of cups have been presented to the club, and very keen competition should be witnessed throughout the coming season. Next Saturday’s race will be the com'mencement of the cup series, which will extend over 12 races. . ’ T. Kearney was seen out on the road on Sunday. He is training very hard for the cup series, but he will have to learn to take a fast lap if he wants to meet with success. S. M‘Queen rode a good race on the outward journey, but faded over Saddle Hill coming home. He should do more hill work. ‘ __ B. Thomas rode well on Saturday. He is training hard, and should be very difficult to beat in a few weeks’ time. A. C. E. Wills, who gained, fastest time on Saturday, is striking his old form again, and, in the handa of E. M'Queen, will be no easy competitor forthe cup. In the four races he has started in lately he has had a first and second and two fastest times. . .
