“WHY, OH WHY?”

CARBINE AND PHAR LAP REPLIES BY ONE WHO KNOWS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) . LONDON, April 7. In the Daily Telegraph before Easter, a Wimbledon correspondent discoursed pn the early history of Carbine, who was imported into England by the Duke or Portland. “Wimbledon,” it may be recalled, wrote that “ as there was no scope for horses of hig calibre in New Zealand, he was taken over to Melbourne. . . . If New Zealanders are so smart, and had all this meat, butter, cheese and grass, why, oh why, did they sell Phar Lap for 100 guineas ? There is no. scope in New Zealand for horses to make a name.’ Then, "an important representative of New Zealand in London” requested “Hotspur,” of the Daily Telegraph, to publish the accompanying reply, taking at the same time advantage of the opportunity to do a little gratuitous advertising for New Zealand produce.” May I answer your Wimbledon correspondent who make two statements and asks one question? His first statement is to the effect that Carbine was bred bv Dan O’Brien. He was not bred by Han O’Brien, but by the Auckland Stud Company, and sold to Dan 0 Bnen as a yearling. , . His second statement is that Phar Lap was sold for 100 guineas. Phar Lap was not sold for 100 guineas, but for 160 guineas. Having corrected the two statements, may I answer your correspondent s question, which is as follows:— 1 “ If .New Zealanders are so smart and had all this meat, butter, cheese and grass, -why, oh why, did they sell Phar Lap for 100 guineas?” The answer is. Because so many people in Wimbledon and other parts of Great Britain buy Danish butter and cheese, and not New Zealand I butter and cheese.
