“COME TO DUNEDIN” WEEK
Matters in connection with the processions on June 2 were advanced another stage at a meeting of the Procession Committee of the “ Come to Dunedin ” Week held yesterday afternoon. It was reported that the Manufacturers’ Association was arranging for 40 or 50 exhibits in the trade section of the procession, and that a number of retailers had also notified their intention to take part.—lt was decided to advise all prospective entrants that they must notify the organiser before the end of the present week of their intention to take part. A letter was received from the 1.0.0. F. approving of the suggestion that the Friendly Societies be asked to take part in the procession.—lt was resolved again to approach the other societies with a view to securing their co-operation. Mr D. Minnock reported that the Scottish societies had their section of the national exhibits in hand. Mr Salmon reported regarding the night procession for June 4 that he still required a few helpers for the torchlight section. The marshalling arrangements were left in the hands of the head marshal (Major Dampen) and members of the Procession Committee. Mr H. Prowse undertook to draw up a plan of the positions assigned to each section. The King’s Birthday parade on the morning of June 3 was reported to be arranged. This would include the firing of the royal salute by the artillery, and the feu de joie, and the parading of the colours. A meeting of ladies was held yesterday morning at the Town Hall when it was decided to take up a collection on the streets on June 2 (procession day) as part of the “ Come to Dunedin ” movement. Stands were allotted, and it was decided to issue badges to donors of sixpence or more. The proceeds of this collection will, as in the case of all other special functions during the week (May 28 to June 4) be devoted to unemployment relief. TUG OF WAR. A meeting of the Tug of War Committee was held last evening and attended by Captain S. M. Satterthwaite (chairman), Captain Pollard, Messrs P. Davis, E. Kerr, J. Mathewson, E. Wheeler and S. B. Macdonald. It was decided that the handing over of prizes after the contest J»e in the hands of the chairman, the organiser and the secretary. Messrs Mathewson and Davis were appointed a sub-committee to obtain a plan of the necessary gear and arrange to have it made locally. It was resolved that any team wishing to protest must deposit 10s, and if the protest was upheld the money would be returned. The committee decided to recommend to the executive to insure teams against accidents provided that such accident was not due to the competitor’s own carelessness. The following officials were appointed for the contests: —Judge, Mr E. Kerr; umpires, Messrs J. Mathewson and P. Davis; announcer, Captain S. M. Satterthwaite; starter, Captain Pollard. It was left in the chairman's hands to appoint two clerks of scale and two call stewards. The secretary reported that 10 entries had been received for the open competition and 34 for the light-weight class. It was resolved —“That on account of the large number of entries the committee decides to hold a supplementary contest to be held on the Saturday evening for the light-weight teams eliminated in the first round.” It was also agreed that it be a recommendation to the Finance Committee to allow the prizes to be fixed at £5 first and £1 second. Messrs Mathewson and Wheeler were appointed a sub-committee to conduct the draw next Friday evening.
