A novel Gilbertian suggestion for the financial rehabilitation of the Dominion is being canvassed in Marlborough at the present time (says the Marlborough Express). The basis of the plan is that .on the first of each month in every town in the Dominion a party of, say, 100 men—6o farmers and 40 business men—should assemble and march to the nearest official assignee, where each would solemnly file hig schedule, the theory being that most people are bankrupt now and might just as well file and be done with it, thus relieving themselves of all further financial responsibility. It is freely estimated that in all some 500,000 people could be induced to file, more or , less as a patriotic gesture, and the fees, which would amount to something like £3,000,000, would enable the Government to balance its Budget, after which everyone would start off again, leaving the official assignees throughout the country to grapple with the many knotty problems at present causing so much loss of sleep.
