THE WELLINGTON RIOTERS FURTHER SENTENCES IMPOSED. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 17. Martin Brown, who was arrested after being seen to throw a s£bne in Tuesday's riot, was sentenced to-day to 12 months’ imprisonment. Walter John Willis, aged 18, earning £2 5s as a factory hand, and in regard to whom the probation officer submitted a good report, was placed on -probation. He must only associate with people approved by the probation officer, and be. of good behaviour. Herbert Clifford Love, aged 20, a labourer, who threw a piece of mortar in Wednesday’s affair, and is at present on probation for theft, was sentenced to reformative detention for a period not . exceeding two years. William Henry Pearce, aged 25, a labourer, found armed with a stone, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. The magistrate considered the'evidence insufficient in the ease of Charles Henry Hart, aged 34, a contractor, and dismissed two charges against him. Donald Alexander, aged 26, a seaman, admitted breaking a window in Manners street, and was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. Other accused were before the court, but the decisions were reserved or sentence deferred. PRECAUTIONS IN CHRISTCHURCH. STATEMENT BY MAYOR. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 17. Declaring that he had informed the authorities of his willingness to appeal for assistance from the community in the case of disorder in the city and had not yet received an answer, the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan) narrated to the Christchurch City Council the steps he had taken in connection with the establishment of an auxiliary police force. The discussion arose out of a motion moved by Cr Baker thanking the temporary police for their services. It was not carried, but was referred to the Finance Committee so that a resolution acceptable to every councillor could be framed by it.
