THE TEACHING PROFESSION

ro THE EDITOR Sib, —The appeal of Mr Frank Milner to teachers “ not to squeal ” at salary cuts will be pleasing to the Government. But Mr Milner has always tried to please the Government. Is he in a position to appreciate the financial difficulties of those teachers in the lower ranks? His opinion that they are “ jolly well off ” will mislead the public, for the view of the rector of the Waitaki Boys’ High School is somewhat distorted. The position is one of the “ plums" of a profession which offers little chance to its other members of becoming rich men. Mr Milner’s manly and patriotic appeal to the poorer classes “ not to be disgruntled ” would have carried greater weight had it come from one whose financial position enabled him to feel sympathy for his colleagues.— I am, etc,, Teacher.
