The' question of the prevention of fraudulent substitution of foreign lambs for New Zealand lamb on the British market by retail butchers was raised by a Timaru member of the v Canterbury Sheep Owners’ Union, who expressed the opinion that the fines being inflicted in England on conviction at the present time were not adequate. Recent advices from Great Britain, however, were to .the effect that increased activity in this direction by the Meat Board inspectors in England was resulting in a great improvement with regard to fraudulent sales of foreign lamb sold as New Zealand. It was agreed that the work that the Meat Export Control Board was doing in this respect was of great value, and the matter was referred to the federation executive for discussion with the board at its next meeting. Bristol can boast of two really ancient inns, the license of one having been in existence in 1241, while the other is described in a city plan dating from between 1250 and 1350 as “apparently a very ancient hostelry.” Jersey farmers will this year employ 3000 workers from England instead of from Britanny as in previous years.
