Documents of historic interest and importance were threatened by a fire discovered recently at Clitheroe Castle offices, in Lancashire. There are preserved there records of property in large areas of Lancashire and Yorkshire. The fire started apparently, from a beam in a chimney which must have been smouldering for the greater part of the day. The fire brigade had to smash their way through two doors and then found the staircase ablaze. Difficulty was experienced in getting water, and a chain of bucket carriers was formed from a trough some distance from the offices. The Norman keep was never in danger.
