PORT CHALMERS NEWS

UNEMPLOYMENT Inquiries made yesterday elicited the reply that unemployment at Port Chalmers has not decreased during the past few weeks. Eighty-two relief workers are employed this week so far, and the number is likely to be increased before the end of the week. The decrease, however, is very marked as compared with a few months ago, when the weekly number was as high as 11)0 men. Last week was stand-down week so far as allocations were concerned, and the allocations was only £B4. The amount available this week is £lO6. CARGO OF PHOSPHATES i .... Several days’ work will, be provided for the waterfront men when the steamer Wclcombe arrives from Nauru Island, via Lyttelton. The vessel is expected at Port Chalmers some time next week. Part of her, cargo will be discharged at Port Chalmers and a portion at Ravcnsbouruc. CHEAP BREAD SERVICE It is stated that Port Chalmers residents are not likely to have the continuance of the cheap bread service which was instituted last week-end. The bread was brought from Dunedin. It is understood at Port Chalmers that the supply from the city will not be available this week.

WOODEN STEAMER ORETI The small wooden steamer Oreti, which was engaged iu carrying timber from Port Craig to Dunedin for some time, and which has been laid up at Port Chalmers for the past two years, is not past the stage of useful service. The vessel has been inspected by prospective purchasers on more than one occasion since she has been out of commission, and she continues to attract the attention of those in quest of craft of her dimensions.
