Dodds) wrote stating that the condh. tion of the basement of the Dental School was very unsatisfactory, as it became .flooded periodically.—lt was decided to refer the matter to the works Committee,, the architect to make investigations in the' meantime, Tim Director of Education wrote stating that the council had the power of making the award of the Sir George Grey Scholarship.—lt was decided to award the,scholarship, , r .. ... .. The secretary of the ,Otago Hospital Board advised that, subject to the approval of the Minister, the usual grants had been voted to the Dental School and' the clinical laboratories.—Received, Messrs Adams Bros, advised that they, bad drawn the hecessary legislation to validate the 66ft right-of-way giving abcess to the University Ground at. The publisher of “ Datus " wrote asking for a brief account of the foundation of the University.-—lt was decided to leave the matter in the' bands of Brofessor Thomson, to be dealt with at his own discretion, - ? . : • . ~ : Brofessbr Adams wrote asking for the use of the museum lecture room for the Otago Classical Association on the usual terms, request was granted, Brofessor Strong wrote with reference to the personnel of the Chemistry Department.—After a short discussion in committee, it was decided to appoint Mrs Fisher honorary research lecturer in the Home Science Department. ,|"ii FINANCE AND WORKS i: , COMMITTEES. ‘The Finance, and Works Committees reported having considered a request from the ' Basketball* Association for the use of the tennis courts on the South side of the Leith for purposes of basketball.--It WaS resolved that the Use of the courts during the Winter months be offered to the association for the sum of £6 10s. The Finance Committee and Dr Inglis reported on a proposal made by the Professorial Board that the Students’-Asso-ciation be asked to consider invititlg a member of the council to assist them in I their financial arrangements.—lt was resolved that this matter stand over for three months. The Finance Committee alone reported: —The Dean of the Medical Faculty wyole recommendiiig r 'that, if i the Government does not make' a grant in respect cf half Aitken’s salary this be a charge on the Sir. John Roberts Fund. —The committee recommends the council to adopt this method of finance, The commissioner of CroWn lands Suggested a conference between represetita.tlvcfl of the council and'the Hen more tenants on May ll.—lt Was resolved that the council Will be glad tc attend provided that a financial statement regarding each tenant is previously submitted for the council’s information. The committee considered a letter from ,Dr Fockett asking for leave of absence - from the end of the second term, 1933, to March, 1935, A report on this letter from Dr Jack was also submitted. —It was resolved that Dr Foeken be informed that the council adheres to its previous decision to grant him one year's leave of absence, and that he may take this leave either from August, 1933,' to August, 1934. or from November, 1933. to March, 1935;, also, that the matter of a suitable substitute is being taken up with the.' professor,—lt was res dyed to ask Dr Inglis to consult with Dr Jack Ort the matter of a suitable substitute, to discus* With him the question of payment of such substitute and to report. The. committee considered a request from Dr Jack for an additional crant for apparatus in view of the largely Increased numbers—lt was resolved that power to act in this matter be given to the chairman, but' that the approximate amount 1 required be ascertained by .‘he registrar. The committee considered also a letter from Mr Skinner recommending that Mr T. A. C. Hall be engaged'for reconditioning the Maori canoe, and that he be paid return fare from Auckland to Dunedin* that £3 extra be allowed to permit of his visiting the museums at Wanganui and Wellington; wages of £1 a working day to be paid.—lt Was resolved that this request be granted- subject to Mr Skinner receiving a n undertaking that the work will be finished for £soj- together with any other amount subscribed! for the purpose, Sir Thomas Sidey brought before the committee a proposal that Lady Sidey and he should give a reception to graduates on the evening of the graduation ceremony. He asked if the committee would approve of this action, which he wished to take as chancellor.—The com-_ mitteo resolved to thank the chancellor and Lady Sidey very heartily for their generous offer, which the committee accepted on behalf of the council. The committee , considered the question of repairs, to;the; galvanised iron section of the Museum roof—lt was finally resolved that the matter be referred to the chairmen of the Works and Finance Committees with power to act. The committee gave further consideration to the provisions of the National Expenditure Adjustment Bill, and it was resolved that the chancellor and Sir James Allen be', asked tq; make representations to the Minister and to associate with them the "local members of both Houses, and, that the chancellor be asked to send a telegram forthwith Stating that the matter has been considered by the council, and urging that the reduction in the grant to the University be reconsidered. The,'following matters were also dealt with:-r- jj. ’ The committee agreed to procuring the current number* of Biochemisehe Zeitschrlft and to charge them to the University ■ Cancer Fund. * The committee approved of reducing the fee for home science diploma physics to £0 6* as from the beginning Of 1932. The committee's attention was drawn to a Joeal in the newspaper stating that the amount'recommended to the Hospital Board as a grant for the University laboratories was £750. Information was given to the committee, howei^ir ( that this amount was a mistake as it was intended to make flic ordinary grant of £IOOO, . SALARIES FOR APRIL. The committee directed that in paying salaries for the month of April (he registrar should assume (he passing of (he National Expenditure Adjustment Bill and reduce salaries accordingly. The report was adopted, 'GRADUATION CEBEMONT, The special committee set up in respect of the Graduation Ceremony reported that the following resolutions were carried: — That invitations to the ceremony be sent to 30 men Students and 20 women students, and that additional seats be provided for final year students if possible, the names to be selected by the Students’ Association, That the mace-bearer be appointed by the chairman of the Professorial Board. That the formula at the commencement of tlm oration be amended to: “Mr Chancellor and Mr Vice-chancellor of the University of Otago, Mr Pro-chancellor and members of the Senate of the LniVersity of New Zealand, members of the University Council, members of the University staff and graduates.’ That the registrar write to the Students’ Association asking them to np-

At a conference between members of the Reserves Committee and the Land Board with reference to various tenants the serious difficulties of the position were referred to by the commissioner of Grown lands, Mr N. C. Kensington, and in the discussion which took place, representatives i of the Council indicated they were entirely in agreement with the commissioner in his expression of opinion that the Chamber of Commerce .scheme should be adopted in dealing with the various. tenants—i.c., that the revenue from the various holdings should be distributed in a fair way between the landlord and the stock and station agent or other mortgagee, It was consequently finally agreed to arrange a conference ,in OatUaru to be attended by the cornmisisoner of CroWn lands and one member of the Land Board, two representatives of the council* the stock and station agents, and other mortgagees interested in the tenants. Before this conference the .commissioner agreed to write to the various firms and endeavour to obtain from them a full statement of .the position of the clients concerned,—The vice-chancellor and the registrar were appointed to represent the council at the conference,
