TAIERI AND PENINSULA MILK SUPPLY COMPANY

This company commenced operations in 1884 with the object of supplying Dunedin and suburbs with milk, the supply at that time being drawn from the, Taieri Plain and Otago Peninsula districts, from which sources the company took its name. As supplies increased, the surplus was used for the manufacture of butter. About 25 years ago it took over the North Otago Dairy Company in Oamaru, together with the concern. With the introduction of home separation, the creameries were gradually disposed of, until the company has now in operation two factories —the main factory in Dunedin, with a branch at Oamaru, Cream supplies are drawn from all parts of Otago, Southland, and South Canterbury. Both factories are equipped with the latest and most modern plant and machinery. At Djunedin a large glass-lined vat is used for holding the cream, this being the first vat of its kind to be used in a dairy factory in Otago. The company has its own cool stores in which thousands of boxes of butter can be held. The output of butter by the company is one of the largest in Otago. The greater part of it is disposed of locally, and the balance is exported. The quality of the manufacture is known world wide. The company has a very extensive retail milk and cream business. To supply the city and suburbs some thousands of gallons of milk are required daily. It has a large -fleet of , motors to deliver the milk to the factory, which is equipped with a thoroughly up-to-date pasteurising plant. On arrival the milk is sampled and tested, thus ensuring that only milk of the purest and best quality is distributed to customers. The company is a co-operative one. and is worked in the interest of the producer. As in the early days the company assisted the farmer by the establishment of creameries, now it renders service to the dairy farmer by assisting him in the purchase of purebred stock, milking machines, topdressing manures, separators, etc. For quality and service this company is in the forefront of the dairy industry.
