The largest pumps in the world have recently been employed in draining storm waters' from the city of New Orleans. Twelve of these .monsters, each 14ft pumps, and each able to discharge (50,000 cubic feet of water every minutes, wore in operation. A steel-bladhd screw, whirled like an augur bit by a powerful motor, propels the water. New Orleans is built within a natural bowl, with no outlet for rain water to flow by gravity to the Mississippi River. Only seven such pumping stations would be required in order to pump as much water as pours over Niagara!
