MR J. G. COATES, P.C., M.P., MINISTER OF EMPLOYMENT
CO-OPERATION OF ALL CLASSES INVOKED THE RESPONSIBILITY ON THE PUBLIC Through the courtesy of the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association I have been invited, as Minister of Employment, to send a message to the Otago Daily Times for publication during ‘‘ Made in New Zealand Week.” The co-operation of all sections of the community in tackling the unemployment situation is sought by the Government, and the public is reminded of the recent press appeal that all citizens should help. Through the general
decline in world prices for all primary products the primary producer has suffered enormous reductions in the export values received for his products, and he has to compete in the markets of the world for the sale of such products against intense competition. The manufacturing industries are in a somewhat different position, as, having practically no export market, they depend upon the people of New Zealand for support. To a large degree it rests with the public whether these industries shall flourish and develop or languish for want of appreciation of their economic value to the Dominion. By showing preference for New Zealand-made goods (priceand quality, of course, being an important factor) the industries of the Dominion will be stimulated and avenues provided for employment. The campaign to bring New Zealand articles more prominently before the public is to be commended as really worth while, and I congratulate those responsible for “ New Zealand Industries Week.”
