THE TEST OF COMPARISON OF MANUFACTURES

THE OPPORTUNITY OF PROVIDING WORK By MR J. G. JEFFREY, President Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association. During the next ten days Dunedin retailers are devoting their windows to a display of the products of New Zealand factories, and are appealing to purchasers to buy these goods rather than imported ones. The 437 shop window displays demonstrate conclusively that “ New Zealand made ” goods to-day compare favourably with the imported article I for both quality and I “ get-up.” The main reason for this display is to foster the demand for “New Zealand made ” goods, a greater preference for which would undoubtedly alleviate the problem of unemployment, which is concerning the community so deeply at the present time. Let us remember that every time one buys an | article made overseas when a locally-made one is available, he or she I is losing a golden opportunity of providing much-needed work for our own people. Further, it should be remembered that the wages paid to our own workers will remain in New Zealand, and go to increase the purchasing power of the whole community. The hearty co-operation of our retailers, the Press and public men with our manufacturers, who do not ask that their goods be bought unless competitive for value s>j\d. quality.

form an appeal to our citizens to pledge themselves to show preference for “ New Zealand made ” goods when buying their requirements. Finally, I would just say this, that in buying New Zealand made goods, not only do we help to keep our fellow countrymen throughout New Zealand in constant employment, but we also indirectly help ourselves, and last, but not least, wo make it possible for the boys and girls about to leave school to obtain work in our local factories and warehouses.
