PALMERSTON NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, May 17. RUGBY NOTES. Bennie Ward, Waikouaiti, is showing good form at full-back at present. R. Heenan, Palmerston’s half, is inclined to put the ball into the scrum at an angle; otherwise he is playing a good game. J. Barber, Macraes, is playing well, but he tries to go too far before passing. Davis, half-back for Waikouaiti, is also inclined to go too far for a player in his position. If Kitchen (Palmerston) would run straight and cut out lob-passing, he should make good. Gordon (Palmerston) should watch where he passes, as he did some wild throwing on Saturday. Ron Stewart seems to be at home at centre, and times his passes nicely to his three-quarters, Stevenson and Murray, who are both playing well. Aitcheson and Kirkwood are the pick of the Waikouaiti forwards at present. Lang, Parkhill, and Collins are going well in the Palmerston pack, but the two last-named are sometimes seen trying to pick the ball up when it should be kept at tlieii; feet. M'Crosky (Macraes) is very fast off the mark at five-eighth, and this will show to advantage on a dry ground. Macfaes have a good wing in Sutherland, but their half-back is far too slow. C. Sutherland is the best of their forwards, with D. O’Connell a close second. PERSONAL. Mr T. Mitchell, of the local Post Office, has received promotion, and will commence as acting postmaster at Mataura in about a fortnight’s time.
