CANCER RESEARCH

INVESTIGATIONS ABROAD VALUE OF EARLY DIAGNOSIS (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 16. . Although there have been no recent developments in cancer research medical men are hopeful that the investigations being'carried out in London at present will add considerably to the knowledge of the disease, particularly in connection with early diagnosis. Dr E. F. D’Ath, professor of pathology at the Otago Medical School, who was a passenger on the Maunganui, which arrived to-day from Sydney, said in an interview that investigations were being carried out in London under the direction of the British Empire Cancer Campaign, and ho thought it quite possible that within a year or so something of very great value in connection with early, diagnosis and the better treatment of the disease would be known. A great deal of work was being done on the Continent, particularly in regard to the treatment of the disease by deep X-ray therapy. Very considerable advances had been made in this form of treatment. “ I devoted considerable attention to the methods adopted for educating the public in regard to cancer in various countries, Dr D’Ath said. “ Probably the most intensive method of public education in this connection was carried out in America and Germany, , I obtained full particulars of their methods, and some of them may be adaptable to use in New Zealand.”
