ESCAPED PRISONER
CHARGE OF HARBOURING WOMAN REMANDED FOR WEEK. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 16. A married woman named Vera Grace Hall, aged 23, a waitress, who is alleged by the police to have been harbouring the escaped prisoner, Frederick William Schluter, was arrested at a house in Freeman’s Bay on Saturday. She appeared before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court to-day, and was charged with failing to comply with the terms and conditions of her release on probation. Counsel for the defence said the accused had told him that she was. the wife of Schluter, whom she had married in March, 1931. A short time before her marriage she had been placed on probation, one of the conditions being that she should not associate with Schluter. Ido not know if the police arrested this woman just, to hold her,* said counsel. "Certainly not,’’ interposed Detective Sergeant Kelly. “We are going ahead with the case.” In granting a week’s adjournment on the application of the police, the magistrate suggested that the accused should.be placed in the care of the female probation 1 officer during the period of the remand. "I am afraid I cannot accept the responsibility,” said Major Gordon. She added that the accused had been on probation for false pretences as far back as 1927 Detective Moore, who arrested the accused, said the woman was the wife of Schluter. They had been living together as recently as last Saturday, when the woman was taken into custody. Schluter was still at large. , .. , The accused was remanded on bail or £SO.
