AMENITIES SOCIETY

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Dunedin Amenities and Town Planning Society was held yesterday afternoon and was attended by Messrs Crosby Morris (in the chair), G. Simpson, jun., D. Tannock, G. M. Thomson, J. M’George, J. Rennie, A. C. Cameron and J. Wilson. ' GENERAL. A letter was received from the Otago Harbour Bbard granting the society permission to beautify'the triangular vacant section at the corner of Hanover street and Anzao avenue. —It was decided to carry out the work, and also, subject to the approval of the t present lessees, to beautify the adjoining block. It was decided that the thanks of the committee should be extended to the motorists who had provided transport for the members during their visits of inspection to various parts of the city and suburbs. . It was decided to write to the University Council drawing attention to the damage being done by the Water of Leith to the banks of thfe Castle street frontage of the University grounds near St. David street, and urging that some preventative measures against further erosion should be taken as soon as possible. It was agreed to request the City Council to take some steps to improve the appearance of the north end of Queen street.

Mr Rennie referred to the attractive appearance of the entrance to the Caversham School, and on his motion, it was agreed to tender the society’s congratulations to the School Committee.

Mr Thomson brought up the question of the rubbish tip near Maia Station, and pointed out that this spot was a veritable eyesore to visitors arriving by train from the north. —It was decided to write to the West Harbour Borough Council asking that it should take some steps to have the appearance of the locality improved. The chairman mentioned the approach to the Caversham railway station from the Main South road and pointed out that some planting had already been carried out on the section adjoining it. There were, however, two large railway hoardings standing in front of the section, And until these were removed, it was doubtful if any further improvement could be made. Everyone coming by road from the south cOuld see this section, which was at present very unsightly.—lt was decided to write to the district traffic manager of railways asking that the hoardings should be removed, and promising that if this were done the society would assist in beautifying the section. ROAD TO MOUNT CARGILL. Mr W. J. M'Dowell wrote asking for the society’s support in a movement by the residents of the Pine Hill district to have the Pine Hill road completed to Mount Cargill by way of the upper portion of Bethune’s Gully. The writer explained that the residents, were forwarding a petition to the -City Council requesting that it should take the work in hand, and stressed the value of such a road from a scenic point of view.—Mr Wilson said that this matter had already been discussed by the City Council. It was only a matter of the city engineer putting a gang on. It would make an ideal work for the unemployed as there would be so much barrow work in it.—lt was decided that the City'Council should be written to intimating that the society was in support of the project, and suggesting that the work be carried out under the unemployment scheme. ACCESS TO SIGNAL HILL AND FLAGSTAFF; The. chairman said he thought that the society should make a special effort to provide access to the top of Signal Hill. Better access to Flagstaff would also be a great asset to the city, and a road to within easy distance of the summit would prove a decided attraction to visitors. — Mr Rennie considered that the society should make itself felt in this matter. An far as Flagstaff wag concerned there was a splendid opportunity for providing relief work by constructing a road to its summit, from which one of the most magnificent panoramas in the Dominion revealed itself. He hoped that the society would strongly support any movement towards having a road constructed around Flagstaff.—Mr Simpson said that the credit of raising this question lay with the Otago Motor Club, and he thought that the society should co-operate with this body. He would prefer, however, to see the work of opening access to the summit of Signal Hill gone on with.— The chairman said that the matter was 'a rather important one to be settled offhand. It might be more satisfactory if the members considered the question and met again subsequently, to discuss it,—lt was agreed that a meeting should be held on Monday .next to go into the whole question with a view to concentrating on one or, other of the proposals'. OFFICERS APPOINTED.

Mr H*. P, Aitken was elected honorary treasurer of the society. The name of Dr F. R. Riley was added to the list of committee members.
