TROTTING
By Sentinel. The Sapling Stakes candidate Match King finished sixth in the Advance Handicap run at Oamaru. Reclaim, who was amongst the place winners at Oamaru, is a sister to Wrackler and Arcthusa. A sign of progress: The Southland Racing Club’s racebooks included a trotting table commencing at a 2.3 gait. Nelson’s Victory, the winner of the Enfield Handicap at Invercargill, is a half-brother to Erin’s Fortune. He was got by Nelson Bingen from Miss Fortune, by Sterling Lad (son of Dexter) from the imported mare Edith. Kewpie’s Triumph, who won the Goldfield’s Handicap run at the Thames meeting, has a pedigree based on thoroughbred blood on both sides of the house. He traces back on the dam’s side to the thoroughbred mare Georgina, and on the other to the famous American thoroughbred Boston.
The five-shilling totalisator grew in favour with punters at Oamani because
in some races each of the placed horses paid good dividends. The “ dollar ” machine is not, however, in favour with owners and trainers.
The Guy Parrish mare Fairyland, who won a double at Oamaru, is a half-sister to Napland. She was produced by Dreamland, a mare by Woodland Whispers, a son of Wildwood and Balmy Breeze, by Redwind, an imported son of Red Wilkes. Royal Money, the second dam of Dreamland, was got by Rothschild —Beatrice, by Lincoln Yet.
A two-year-old pacer named Eighteen Carat was given a run down the straight when the field for the Dash Saddle Trot went out to race at Invercargill. He was got by Sungod, but his dam is apparently not eligible for entry in the Stud Book.
The handicapping of the maiden trotter Nell Volo on a 3min 41sec mark at the Thames meeting has caused a good deal of surprise in trotting circles. The mare, who was imported from America by F. J. Smith a few months ago, has no race performances, and as it waa expected that she would be treated as a maiden, she was entered in the Kareke Handicap, limit 3min 50sec. The Trotting Conference Committee, which now deals with the question of mrks for imported horses, has evidently opinions of its own on the question, and placed the Peter Volo mare on 3min 41sec. Nell Volo took a two-year-old breeders' record for a mile in 2miu 26Jsec, and the handicap has evidently been assessed on this effort. Smith stated last week that all young standardbred horses in America to take a mile record to be standardised, not for handicapping purposes, but in case they do not race later and are used for breeding purposes.
