BREAD PRICES REDUCED ' At the week-end bread was sold at Port Chalmers at a big reduction, 8d being charged for the 41b loaf and 4d for the 21b loaf. Previously the price •charged for the 41b loaf was lid. SPECIAL MEETING OF COUNCIL A special meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council will be held tomorrow evening to consider the estimates for the coming year and the financial position of the borough. These matters will be dealt with in committee. RELIEF WORKS Eight men were employed. on relief work in the borough yesterday. One of the most important works' in operation at the present time is the formation of the new road connecting Cemetery road with William street. About ,15 relief workers are employed on this undertaking. The number of unemployed men registered this week is 161. This total does not include 153 waterside workers. About 10 of the latter were employed on relief work yesterday. The number of relief workers employed last week was DESERTED WATERFRONT ' The Port Chalmers waterfront presents a very deserted appearance at the present time. Every berth at the wharves is vacant, and the only activity noticeable yesterday was the landing of a few boxes of fish from one or two small trawlers. The only vessel occupying a berth at the wharf is. the intercolonial passenger steamer Mahcno. There is no activity aboard her, and- she comes under the heading of a "dead" ship. The waterside Workers have had a very lean time of late, as no work has been offering at their calling for about 11 days. There js little prospect of any waterfront work for another week or two. Towards the end of the month, however, two or three vessels are expected to load frozen meat and other products for England. PERSONAL Mr Cecil Croll, chief engineer of the Canterbury* Farmers' Freezing Company's cool stores at Christchurch. is visiting Port Chalmers. Mr Croll was in the service of the Union Company for many years. At one time he was third engineer of the passenger steamer Waikare, which was wrecked in Milford Sound, and also third engineer of tin Aparima for some time when she was engaged in the Calcutta-New Zealand fade before the war. He left the service of the Union Company to take a position as chief engineer of the Belfast freezing works, where he was located for several years. BOWLING CLUB The winter activities of the Port Chalmers Bowling Club are now in full swing. Thursday evenings are devoted to social gatherings, and these are largely attended. The first round of the winter billiard tournament is about to be commenced, and members are taking a very keen interest in the competition. GOLF CLUB # The membership of the Port Chalmers Golf Club has increased to a marked degree during the past few weeks. This increase is mainly due to the improvements made to the new links nt Sawyers' Bay. Members arc showing their japprceiiVio'l of the work carried out by the committee by attending the links in large numbers. The links have been patronised by a number of enthusiasts from the city during the past few weeks.
