(From Our Own Correspondent.) CROMWELL, May 16. RAILWAY RIFLE CLUB. This week’s competition held by the Railway Rifle Club was the first for the Harrison Memorial Shield. The gold button for the highest score off the rifle was won by A. Hughes with one short of the possible, and the handicap button was won by A. Hyndman. The scores were;— E. Gillespie 76—4—80, A. At the annual meeting of the Cromwell branch of the Plunket Society, the president (Mrs Webb) presided. The meeting opened with a fitting reference to the death of the late secretary (Mrs Cowey), and a motion of sympathy was passed. Lengthy reports from the president and Nurse Watt indicate a satisfactory year’s work. The balance, sheet showed a credit balance at the commencement of the year of £33 4s Id, and at March 31, 1932, the credit was £35 16s 4d. Office-bearers for the ensuing year were elected as follows:—President, Mrs Webb; vice-presidents—Mesdames Jelley and Yeoman; secretary, Mrs L. C. Paterson; committee—Mesdames Yeoman. Crombie, Bennets, M’Donald, Burrows. Jelley, Wishart, Bretherton, Munro, Paterson, Stumbles, and Miss Wilson. Mesdames E. Jolly and L. M. Joljy were elected honorary members. THE COURTS. There was another busy day at the monthly sitting of the Warden’s Court, when nearly 40 applications, mostly in respect to mining, were dealt with, indicating the revival of the industry. Au application by two miners for an area for mining on a small grazing run was adjourned for an inspection by the warden. The trustees for the estate controlling the run have (Objected, and the warden’s decision will be of interest in view of mining developments in Central Otago. GOLF. The ladies’ golf competition this week was a Flag Match, and the winner was Miss O. Gordon. Gross scores returned were as follow:—Mrs Paterson 90, Mrs Grant 98, Mrs Radford 99, Mrs Wilkinson 101, Mrs Clarkson 101, Miss Gordon 104. In the men’s section a Stroke Match was played on Saturday, the best cards returned being:—R. M'Sorily, handicap 30, net. 62; J. E. Webb, 18—68; E. Jolly, 20—69; F. Forsythe, 30—69; S. Cuthbertson, 18-72; Dr Austin, 30—74. FOOTBALL. The local team was successful in both the flag fixtures on Saturday. At Alexandra, Cromwell seniors defeated the home team, 5 —3, and at. Lowburn the B team beat Wannka 9—o. ? Returning from the match at Alexandra, the motor bus conveying the players met with a mishap and capsized in the ClydeCromwell Gorge. The principal sufferer is George Chalmers, one of the players, who received a broken arm. The* accident is attributed to the bus skidding in loose gravel.
