SHUNTING ACCIDENT,
Mr Albert E. Murray, a signalmanshunter at the Milton railway station, is at present an inmate of the lojcal hospital suffering from injuries to his back suffered in a shunting accident. He was struck severely by the platform rails of an empty railway carriage which had been detached from the evening train and was being shunted into a siding. The hand brake, which Mr Murray was manipulating, failed to act properly, and the carriage bumped violently into some standing trucks, thus causing the injuries which will probably incapacitate him from duty for a few weeks. LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS. The official scrutiny of the rolls and the recount for last Wednesday’s elections were commenced at Bruce County Council’s office this morning. The final figures for three county ridings have been announced by the returning officer (Mr L. W. Potter), and disclose only a difference of one vote from the previous declared figures. The final results are: —Balmoral No. 1 Riding: V. Wilson (retiring councillor). 67; Joseph John Cross, 47. Clarendon Riding: Harry Maclean Driver (retiring councillor), 53; Frederick Charles Andrews, 39. Mount Stuart Riding: William John Sheat (retiring councillor), 93; William Allison, 83. LENGTHY PUBLIC SERVICE. A collective record of public service, which it will probably be difficult to equal in any other local authority in the Dominion, has been achieved by members of the Bruce County Council. Mr 11. M. Driver (re-elected for Clarendon Riding) is the “ father of the council ” with 334 years’ continuous service; Messrs Jasper Clark (Crichton Riding) and David Gardyne (Glenledi Riding) have served 234 years; Mr W. J. Sheat (Mount Stuart Riding), 14J years; Mr Adam King (Balmoral No. 2 Riding), 10 years; Mr Victor Wilson (Balmoral No. 1 Riding), eight years; Mr A. Renton (Matau and Inch Clutha Ridings), 12 years; Mr D. M’Gregor (Tokomairiro Riding), nine years. The length of service of these eight councillors is 1354 years—an average of slightly over 19J years. , Mr William Bell, who did not seek reelection for Waihola Riding, had 234 years’ service to his credit. SALE OF BOROUGH LEASES.
An auction sale of the Milton Borough Council’s reserve leases at Fairfax, comprising about 245 acres, was conducted by Mr J. J.
