RETURNED SOLDIERS’ CHOIR

The programme to be presented in the Town Hall next Wednesday by the Returned Soldiers’ Choir include*:-music covering a wide range of expression; Mendelssohn’s cantata, “To the Sons of Art” reveals graphic tone paintings of enraptured adoration, and rises to a great' climax. Serene and, chaste harmonies will he appreciated in “Softly, Softly O’er the Sea.” suggesting;the tranquil rhythm of a quiet sea. In contrasting mood, will be Sullivan’s “ Long Day' Closes," 11 Sylvia,” by Oley Speaks, is a graceful love song of ardent appeal. " The Wanderer’s ■ Night Song ” reveals the beauty Schubert found in his melodic mind. There is an’ old-time flavour in “The Village Blacksmith,” in which the interweaving of the “ Old Hundredth ” develops a devotional spirit. The stirring “ Anvil Chorus,” “The Tar’s Song,” and “Come to the Fair ” complete the offering. Mr Maitland M'Cutcheon has chosen “ Valse Triste ” (by Sibelius) and “Ballet Musik” (Scbubert). Patrons will 'hear for the first time Miss Dorothy Stentiford’s beautiful contralto voice in two selections, and the choir soloists will be Messrs George Crawford, W. Strang, and S. Jeffs. The quar- ( tet in the “ Sons of Art ” are Messrs D. Lyons, C. E. Collins, T. Harvey, and T. D. White. Mr John T. Leech will be m control.
