RABBITING

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I trust the letter appearing in your issue of Saturday will be read by all trappers who arc skinning, and also by all landowners who are not employing trappers. Within a few miles of his block Mr Ball can go to a landowner whoso land carries thousands of rabbits but no trappers. The Babbit Board evidently boycotts the Alexandra Freezing Works. Why? The Alexandra Borough Council, I believe, poisoned some 500 rabbits. Is this the fault of the department, the inspector, or the council? I sent 25 dozen new traps to Alexandra to be gold at cost, and to be paid for by rabbiters. The traps are still there. 1 am paying over £l2O a week to trappers in Mr Balks district. Ilis caniings arc well below the average of the others’ earnings. There is something wrong when land receiving Government subsidy and close to a freezer does not supply that freezer, but wastes good food by poisoning rabbits. I am paying over 20 times as much lor the rabbits as Mr Ball gays he obtained for his rabbitskins, so there is something wrong in Centra! Otago. lam not complaining, simply showing that more money would come into New Zeafhnd, more people would be fed overseas, and there would be fewer on relief works here if rabbits properly handled were sent to freezing works than when the carcass of the rabbit is allowed to rot on the hillsides. —I am, etc., K. S. Black. Dunedin, May 14.
