WEST COAST MINES
INTIMATION BY OWNERS REDUCTION OF WAGE RATES MEN ASK FOR CONFERENCE (Per United Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, May 15. The West Coast Miners’ Council yesterday discussed an ultimatum from the coal owners’ organisation statin" that from tomorrow the mines of the district will be operated under new terms, including what are described as drastic l-eductions of*the rates of wages, as well as the yardage, timbering, and other rates and the lengthening of wet time hours, together with the reintroduction of trucking by the miners. The council resolved to recommend the unions at stop-work meetings to-morrow to reject the owners’ terms and to ask instead'for a conference in order to come to an agreement. An intimation to this effect was sent to the coal owners. The miners point .out that in the past the owners have always met the district councils in conference to arrange agreements, whereas on this occasion the owners sent each union an ultimatum, to take effect immediately. The indications are that unless the owners alter their attitude to the extent of allowing a conference in order to reach an amicable agreement the result will be a stoppage in the industry on (he West Coast generally.
