THE TRAMWAY STRIKE
TRIBUNAL OF INQUIRY FINDING EXPECTED TO-DAY SPECIAL CONSTABLE ASSAILED (Per United Press Association.) 'CHRISTCHURCH, May 15. The tram strike tribunal has completed the hearing of although no statement to this effect is available, it is believed that the tribunal has also finished its deliberations. An announcement of the tribunal’s finding is expected to-morrow morning. The week-end passed almost without incident. The service ceased early on Saturday evening, the last trams leaving the city at 5.45 p.m., and there was no service to-day. There was no repetition this week of last Saturday’s demonstration at the football matches. , A temporary constable was assaulted on Friday night by four men who were lying in wait for him on his way home, One of his assailants knocked him down with a blow on the face, and the constable, a lighfly-built young man seeing the futility of attempting to defend himself against such odds, took to his heels and got safely away. The assault not altogether unexpected, for the victim had received two telephone messages and one verbal warning through a friend that unless be withdrew from the police he would be set upon. Many similar threats have been made to other special police and their families. So that the arduous work may be spread over easier shifts and because it is convinced of the necessity for enrolling 1000 additional temporary police for the preservation of law and order, the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce has sent a circular letter to business firms asking that members of their staffs should enrol.
