THE LINDBERGH BABY

GREAT PUBLIC INDIGNATION HUNT FOR THE MURDERER INTENSIVE SEARCH TO BE MADE (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) NEW YORK, May 13. (Received May 15, at 5.5 p.m.) With President Hoover and Washington ordering all Federal secret service agencies to “ make the kidnapping and murder of the Lindbergh baby a live and never-to-be-forgotten case until the criminals implicated are brought to justice,” New Jersey officials have started organising the greatest man hunt in history, and offers of co-operation from law enforcement agencies throughout the United States are pouring in. Meanwhile Colonel Lindbergh visited the morgue at Trenton and identified the body. He ordered cremation, which was immediately effected. Mrs Lindbergh remained in seclusion with her mother and friends. Public indignation remhins at a high pitch, the press and public officials demanding the sternest action. Many citizens of Hopewell are openly advocating lynching if the murderers are captured. * The investigation hinges on a mass of conflicting clues, which the authorities propose to thresh out systematically. GOVERNMENT OFFERS REWARD SEARCH FOR CRIMINAL GROUP. WASHINGTON, May 14. (Received May 15, at 5.5 p.m.) A joint resolution was introduced into the House to provide a reward of 100,000 dollars for information leading to the arrest of the Lindbergh baby kidnappers. Seventy-five coastguard vessels and six destroyers are patrolling the Atlantic coast in search of a boat believed to be carrying either the kidnappers or a group of criminals who were trying to extort a further large sum of money from Colonel Lindbergh and with whom the colonel was attempting to make a contact at the time the body of the baby was found. KIDNAPPERS’ HOAX MEANS OF IDENTIFICATION REVEALED. TRENTON (New Jersey); May 13. The Trenton Times said to-day that the State Prosecutor (Mr Erwin Marshall), in a conference on Thursday, at midnight, with Dr John F. Condon, the head of the Lindbergh search operations, was informed that a sleeping suit from the baby’s body had been turned over to him in the negotiations whicji resulted in the payment some time ago of 50,000 dollars as ransom money. The sleeping suit, Mr Condon said, is in the possession of ’Colonel Lindbergh. On April 9 Colonel Lindbergh revealed that a cruel hoax had been perpetrated on him by the kidnappers of his son. He announced that after proper identification had been carried out a ransom of 50,000 dollars was paid to them, upon their agreement to notify him of the exact whereabouts of the baby, but the child was not found at the designated point. Several days w T ere then permitted to elapse to give the abductors every opportunity to keep that promise when hope was abandoned that they would fulfil their agreement.
