Wakpkura, Zealandia, Benholm, Brunswick, Maiunganul. . ’ ' ; ; Awarua.—Canadian' ’ Challenger, Monowal, Walkouaiti.. : , «-;■ I. ■ J. * IDLE TONNAGE IN. GREAT BRITAIN; It has been argued that owing,:. to the largo volume of idle tonnage In Great Britain prospects of new contracts are unfavourable. This point considers the Motor Ship ‘Journal, Is unduly stressed, for the reason that British ships aggregating 3,700,000 tons gross aro over 20 years old. -Even In ordinary times they would be obsolescent, but thelr-unsultablllty for operation under modern conditions la far greater than In normal periods, owing to the very rapid' advance that has been made In the construction of propelling machinery since they were built. A 20-year-old steamer Is now. for this reason, as out of date as ifras a 30-yoar-old vessel in 1912. Of ships over 20 years old there' are in the world 20,000,000 tons gross, and not one could compete on any basis of economy with a modern motor ship. It is .believed, therefore, that the slightest turn In the tide would mean that contracts for new cargo tonnage must be placed in considerable numbers. The alternative-,ls iff' requisition obsolete ships,_and it can be demonstrated that, taking all costs Into consideration, these are much less economical to run -than new inbtor vessels. i.-‘ v ■■ '
