FRIENDLY SOCIETIES

PROTESTANT ALLIANCE. The fortnightly meeting of the Valley True Blue Lodge was held in the Orange Hall, Leith street, on Tuesday evening last, W.M. Bro. A. S. Barrett presiding. All officers were present, and also a large number of members. The usual sick re* ports were dealt with, and sick pay passed tor payment. One new member was initiated, and the instructions were given by W.M. Bro. A. S. Barrett in a very able manner. Three propositions for membership were received. The lodge adjourned to listen to a lecture ghen by P.M. Bro. T. Arnold on the “ Emblems of the society.” The lecture was a very interesting one, and was appreciated by all, a very hearty vote of thanks being accorded to the speaker. The visitors were then entertained at supper by the Social Committee. Several toasts were honoured and responded to by Bro. Falconer of No. 39. Bro. D. Taylor (No. 21), Sister Hendry (No. 9), and P.M. Bro. T. Arnold. The meeting was closed with the National Anthem. The Valley True Blue Lodge’s first juvenile meeting on Tuesday was attended by a large number of members. This being the first meeting, the boys were addressed on the objects of the juvenile movement by the superintendent (P. Master Bro. J. W. Sutherland), Bro. R. Drysdale, and G, T. Austin, after which nominations we're taken, and the following members were elected to fill the various chairs: —W.M., Bro. N. Williams; DM., Bro. F. Young; chaplain, Bro. I. Tombs; S. Elder, Bro. S. Sinclair; J. Elder, Bro. H. Muir; I. guard, Bro. C. Hiscoke; 0. guard, Bro. D. Scott; secretary. Bro; R. Shepherd; treasurer, Bro. W. Williams. The officers elect were then installed into their various positions, and werfe instructed as to the working 9! the lodge, after which they carried this out in a very efficient manner. They were then asked to close the lodge as instructed. The committee then entertained the boys with games, etc., and a very pleasant evening was brought to a close with the sinking of the National Anthem. , The first installation of the Triumph Juvenile Lodge was held on Thursday last in the Lodge Hall, Kensington. The Superintendent P.M., Bro. G. Perrin, was in charge, and was ably assisted by Sisters Perrin and Ewart. The ceremony of the installation was then proceeded with by the R.W.G.M., Bro. A. Devlin, assisted by the Superintendent P.M., Bro. Perrin, and Sis. Ewart. The following were installed into office;-—W. Mistress, Sis. Jessie Ewart; D.M., Bro. James Ewart; chaplain Sis. L. Packer; secretary, Bro. F O'Neill: treasurer, Bro. J. Smith; S.E., Sis. F. Duff; J.E., Bro. Smith; 1.G., Bro. W. Ewart; 0.G., Bro. R. O’Neill. The R.W.G.M. then addressed the boys and girls, after which they were entertained. The adult lodge was then opened by the W.M., Bro. W. O’Neill, who presided over a large attendance of members and several visitors. The W.M. was assisted by P.M. Bro. G. Hellyer and Chaplain P.M. Bro. C. Barr, and a full staff of officers. There was a large amount of correspondence read and dealt with. The Sick Committee reported on the sick members, and claims for sick payment were passed. Two new members were admitted during the evening the initiation being conducted by the W.M., Bro. O’Neill. Votes of thanks were accorded to Sis. Perrin and Sis. Ewart for the excellent work they had done in making the regalia for the Juvenile Lodge, and also to Bro. G. Perrin, superintendent, for the time and work he had given in forming the Juvenile Lodge. To the vote of thanks to the visitors, Bro. M. Campbell, P.M.; Bro. J. Sutherland, P.M., and Sis. Bennett responded. The R.W.G.M., Bro. Devlin, who had just returned from a visit to the Northern Lodge, conveyed fraternal greetings. Bro. T. Devlin, who had just returned from a visit to Australia, conveyed fraternal greetings from the R.W.G.M.. Bro. Purnell, and the R.W.G.S., Bro. Springall, of New South Wales, and also from Captain Cook Lodge, No. 2. He then entertained the members with some early history of the lodge.

FORESTERS. The fortnightly meeting of Court Enterprise was held on Tuesday evening last, C.R. Bro. J. A. Breen presiding. The Woodwards reported very favourably on the sick. One member, having reached the age of 65, drew out his No. 1 surplus, amounting to £5 12s lOd. Invitations were received and accepted from King Edward’s Pride, May 12; Court Pride of Dunedin. May 16; Queen of Green Island, May 17. It was decided to attend officially. The following brothers were selected to wait upon the District Committee:— P.C.R.’s Bro. W. Jolly, J. W. Patton, I). Mercer, and P.D.C.R. Bro. W. Ibbotson. P.C.R. Bro. D. Mercer tendered his resignation as S.C.R., and Bro. S. Johnson was nominated for the position. The C.R. called on P.C.R. Bro. W. Fleming to install Bro. S. Johnson in his office, and this he did with a few well-chosen remarks. Bro. Johnson returned thanks. The C.R. gave the toast to the visitors, which was responded to by Bro. Robertson and P. C. R. W. Fleming on behalf of Court Pride of Dunedin.
