ROTARY AND REFORM
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —With Rotarians holding a Dominion Conference at Dunedin this week, in the presence of their distinguished chief, Mr Pascall, it is opportune to inquire if Rotarians go far enough to get results from their undoubted great power for good. The branches often discuss subjects that have merely an academic or moral interest and avoid things that are controversial. Let me be clearer. This organisation of immense influence and power one would hope to find seeking the most important problem and forcing its solution. The most important problem to-day is to end the depression, due undoubtedly to scarcity of money in circulation. The Government has not tackled this question, and apparently expects to take four years to do so. At the present loss of earnings—estimated at £30,000,000 to £50,000,000 annually—New Zealand cannot last that time, and there will be colossal misery and death roll, as there will be no source of relief fund for any of us. All the countries of the world are glutted with commodities The only thing lacking is money, and money is only tickets of exchange, which can be printed almost without cost. Will Kotarians —skilled business men —have the courage to say straight out how this money shall be put into circulation (1) immediately in order to stop the ruinous loss (2) without burdening one class to benefit another, (3) without increasing our already over-big national debt of £270,000,000, and (4) without flooding our country with paper money that lias no security behind it for redemption piuposcs?—l am. etc.. Struggling Professional.
