CAVERSHAM SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The monthly meeting of the Caversham School Committee was held on Monday evening, the following being present; — Messrs T. A. Brown (chairman), R. H. Todd, J. J. Friend, C. Sherlock, E. J. Allen, and J. Reid. The chairman extended a hearty welcome to Mr A. Pemberton, who was appointed to fill the vacancy on the committee. The necessary sub-committees for the ensuing year were appointed. The headmaster’s report showed a roll of 722, with an average attendance of 703. It was stated that Miss Cable had terminated her connection with the school on the previous Friday to take up a position at the Normal School. The annual Parents’ Day had been held on Thursday, May 5, when 427 adults took the opportunity of visiting the school, an additional 50 visiting the infant room quarters at the old school site. Winter sports had been organised and teams were showing good promise. Accounts amounting to £ls were passed for payment and expenditure on sports material was authorised. To enable spoil to be carted into the grounds for top-dressing, it was decided to erect a suitable gate in the hedge at the rear of the school grounds. The janitor reported on his triaj of various coals for heating purposes and his recommendation of a suitable fuel was adopted. It was decided to call a special meeting to consider the question of prize-giving and other matters involving financial outlay. Intimation was received of (he retirement, as from the end of May. of Miss Bounin, who has filled the position of infant mistress for a number of years. The committee placed on record its high appreciation of the services rendered by Miss Bounin during her long term of service with (he school. Advice was received from the board that Miss Long had been appointed to fill the vacancy.
