WAIKOUAITI NOTES

(From Our Own Corrkspondbnt.) WAIKOUAITI, May 11. On Thursday last the Bowling and Lawn Tennis Clubs combined in holding a social evening. The attendance was large and the function a most successful one. This was the first large party held in the Oddfellows’ Hall since its enlargement, and the added floor space and increased couveniences were greatly appreciated. A. AND P. SOCIAL. On Friday evening the A. and P. Society held its annual social. Members and their friends assembled in good numbers. Eight games of euchre formed the first part of the programme, Miss Goodwin and Mr Timmins winning the ladies' and men’s prizes respectively. After the card games and supper, the president (Mr I • Hewitt) made a presentation of trophies which had been won outright as follows: Light horse cup (presented by Mrs Orbell), Miss F. Douglass; sheep cup (presented by Mr Percy Heckler), Messrs Ireland Bros.: the K.P. cup for most points in horses, cattle and sheep. Mr James Paine; Messrs Walker and Hall’s trophy for most points in women’s section, Mrs James Townsend; the Clydesdale medal for the best filly at the show, Mr A. Bannatyne. The president received two gold medals, one from the New Zealand I riesian Society for most points in Friesian classes, and one from the Otago branch of the Friesian Society for the best bull at the show. The opportunity was taken, on behalf of the A. and P. Society and the local branch of the Farmers’ Union, to make a presentation of a gold-mounted fountain pen, suitably inscribed, to Mr James Jackson, who expects to leave the district short!'’, Mr Jackson has been a keen and hard-working member of both societies. Dancing followed, and rounded off a most enjoyable evening. Mr C. T. M'Callum was M.C. and Mr V. M’Clymont supplied music for the dances. During the evening songs were rendered by Mrs Wedge and the Misses Brown, of Palmerston. LAWN TENNIS TOURNAMENT. On Saturday last a Mixed Doubles Yankee Lawn Tennis tournament was held to raise funds tor the Waikouaiti Girl Guides. Mrs A. S. Orbell, Messrs G. R. Ritchie, and Harman Reeves lout their courts for the afternoon. About 36 players entered, and the three courts were kept well occupied. The tournament was won by Miss A. Brewer (Dunedin) and Mr L. MTvnight (Palmerston) after a very close match with Miss Reilly and Mr G. A. de Lautour, A delightful afternoon

tea was served by the committee of the Girl Guides at Mrs Orbell’s home, “ The River.” The proceeds from the tournament amounted to £4 2s 6d. PERSONAL.

Mr Magnus Jamieson has successfully undergone an operation at the Dunedin Hospital and is progressing satisfactorily.
