WANAKA NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) PEMBROKE. May 9. . THE WEATHER. The weather changed suddenly ‘ during the week-end, when a fierce gale from the north commenced on Saturday and continued throughout Sunday and Sunday night. Rain commenced to fall yesterday morning, and continued intermittently throughout the day. The weather is now southerly, and the higher peaks have a light coating of snow. LAMB PRICES. During the week lamb and sheep export buyers have been in the district. The prices offered, and in most cases accepted, were ridiculously low. One station holder when offered 3s for the tops in his lambs offered to throw, in the culls for nothing. _ ' T*. ' 1 " GOLF. The first golf competition event of the season was held , on Saturday, when the first round' for Mr John Faulks’a medals was played. A fierce gale from the north made conditions difficult. The following are the best cards:— Ladies (10 holes).—Mrs Perrbw, 60— 20 —40; Mies E. Ceilings, 60—18—44; Miss T. Wilson, 05—20—45; Mrs Jackson, 58— 12 —46; Mrs Collings, 58—11—47; Mrs Studholme, 68—20—48; Mrs Poole, 67 18—49; Miss F, Perrow, 61—12—49; Miss M. Perrow, 68 —19—49; Mrs Mann, 67 18—49; Mrs M'Kegg, 70—19—51; Mrs Thompson, 73—20—53; Miss Habner, 80 —20 —60; Miss Ironside, 94—18 —76. ■Men (18 holes) .—C. Ironside, 96—27 69; D. Matheson, 89—18—71; F, Collings, 88—16—72; B. Ballantyne, 99 —26 —73; F. Jackson, 89—15—74; C. Templeton, 91 — 16 — 75- J. Perrow, 90 —12 —78; James Paulks, 101—20—81; W. Bovett, 124—31 -93; A. M'Kegg, 124—30-94; J. Cobb, 117—30—87; M. Thompson, 143—35 108 DUCK SHOOTING. • Generally speaking, the opening of the shooting season in the Upper Clutha district was disappointing. Several parties on the Cattle Flat area did not average a pair of birds per gun. A party consisting of Messrs Faulks, Capel, Mason, and Woods were more-successful in the Minaret and Wilkins Valley section, and all succeeded'in filling their quota. FOOTBALL. Wanaka’e A and B teams played their first matches in the competition on Saturday. The former drew against, Cromwell, neither side scoring. The B team was defeated by Bannockburn by 36 to nil.
