BRITISH SHIPBUILDING. The annual summary of the mercantile shipbuilding of the world In 1931, Issued last month by Lloyds Register, completes the tale of profound depression, whose essential features had already been Indicated by past quarterly returns of tonnage launched and work begun. During 1931 the output of British yards amounted' to 502,487 tons, comprising 98 steamers of 269,954 tons, 37 motor ships of 227,910 tons, and 13 barges of 4623 tons. This production represents a decrease of 976,076 tons as compared with that for 1930, and Is the lowest recorded since the first Issue In 1888 of Lloyd’s Register shipbuilding returns. The world output in 1931 amounted to 1,617,115 tons, a decrease of 1,272,357 tons as compared with 1930.*' The figure for the past year is the lowest recorded since 1909, with the single exception of the war year 1915. LYTTELTON WHISTLING BUOi. The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s whistling and flashing buoy, which Is moored about a mile and a-half off the Heads, was lifted last Thursday and brought Into Lyttelton for annual overhaul and recharging. Although there was a slight swell running the huge buoy, weighing 11 tons, was picked up with considerably less (rouble than usual. On former occasions there has been a ton or so of marine growth on the under-water part of the buoy, and on the mooring chains, but on this occasion the buoy was almost free of growth, probably due to the use of a special antl-foullng paint.
