“EARNEST” ATTENTION OF ADMIRALTY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, March 17.

Reference was made in the House of Commons to the work on the Singapore base when a vote of £2,245,700 for naval work, buildings and repairs was being considered. Vice-admiral E. A. Taylor asked the First Lord to give a full statement with regard to the progress of the works being carried out in connection with the naval base at Singapore.

Captain Wallace, Civil Lord of the Admiralty, said the total cost of the Singapore scheme was £7,750,000. The Imperial Conference of 1030, which considered the question, decided, owing to the financial stringency, to complete only those works comprised in the present main contract and such ancillary services as wore absolutely necessary. This did not provide for the construction of dockyard workshops under the present vote. But he could assure, the House that (he situation was fully realised by the Admiralty and was at present receiving Ihe close and earnest attention of the First Lord of the Admiralty.
