CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE
LOCAL BODY ADMINISTRATION
DOMINION TRADE MARK
(Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 7.
Consequent upon the receipt of a letter from the Prime Minister (Mr G. W. Forbes) advising the steps the Government was taking to deal with the matter of local body administration, the executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce yesterday decided again to write urging the appointment of the promised commission, The president (Mr W. Machin) said the association should continue to press for the appointment of the commission, and the taxation of trading and local bodies on an equal basis with private concerns dealing in similar commodities should be an item included in the order of reference.
It was reported that the Department of Industries and Commerce had had under consideration the calling of a conference to discuss the possibility of instituting a Dominion trade mark applicable particularly to export products, and the association had been consulted on the question. The position now, however, was that inquiries made by the department showed that there wore serious difficulties in the way of carrying out what was desired. The Meat Export, Fruit Control, and Dairy Boards, as well as manufacturers, had been consulted in the matter, and there was such a lack of unanimity on the question that the department had in the meantime relinquished any further efforts so far as a trade mark was concerned.
