CHESS

OTAGO CLUB. The first meeting of the new committee of the Otago Chess Club was held on Saturday evening and Was attended by Messrs R. M'Dermid (president), 0. Balk, L. D. Coombs, D. Harris Hastings, J.. S. M, Lawson, J, P. Morris. W. G. Steuhouse, R. Watt, G. D. Wright (honorary secretary). Mr XL K. Helling (Wellington) wrote making suggestions regarding abridged telegraphic matches, in view of the impossibilities of carrying out the full programme owing to the excessive charge made by the Government for the use of the wires.—lt was resolved to reply stating that the Otago Club would be prepared to play the Canterbury Club and that a match against a North Island club would require further consideration. The various sub-committees were appointed as fol-low:—-March —Messrs Stenhouse (convener), Coombs, and Morris; House--Messrs Lawson (convener), Herbert, and Watt.

It was resolved that the following tournament should be played during the year;—Senior and Junior Championship, Handicap and Ladder (Clocks) tournaments, clocks to be used and two rounds to be played in the Senior and Junior Championships. i It was resolved to write to the New Zealand Chess Association recommending that, in view of the present economic situation and the difficulty of raising the necessary funds to meet the expense of a congress, the championship meeting should be postponed until 1933, when the Otago Club would be prepared to have it in Dunedin.
