A conference is to be held under the auspices of the Society of Genealogists in London to consider the question of the authenticity of the claims made by a number of persons in Great Britain and the United States who believe that they are descended from the Companions of William the Conqueror. Mr T. R. Thomson, F.S.A., a member of the executive committee of the Genealogists Society, in an article in its magazine, insists that tli'e contemporary evidence on the question is limited to. the Conqueror’s biography by his chaplain, William of Poitiers; the Latin poem, “ Carmen le Bello Hastingensi,” by Guy, Bishop of Amiens, and the Bayeux Tapestry. About 15 individuals can be identified in these as being present at Hastings. Even supposing that the names C of the Companions who were present at the Battle of Hastings are known, .Mr Thomson asks how their descent in blood to the present day can be proved. “ The blood of many a Companion is doubtless in most of us, but that is a matter of more concern to the sociologist than to the genealogist.” Mr Thomson says he believes that 12 “ Companions ” only can be identified with great probability with tenants mentioned in the Doomsday Book. In 102!) the number of deaths from tuberculosis in England and Wales was ,"7,990. In 1015 the number of deaths from this cause was 54,295.
